The Choice of Doing Nothing

The warm breeze of a sunny day touched my face as I sat in a cross-legged position with my arms crossed, I watched as they slowly gathered. "There is nothing to do," I told myself. I have to just sit here and watch. The crowd was quiet except for the wind. No one tames the wind.

I see a sea of sand and everything seems yellow, even the sky. There are no trees, no green life, only sand. The distance shows only mountains of sand. I am on top of one of those mountains but it seems as if this mountain is hardened and has a strong foundation. Sitting on the edge of the mountain, I feel a sense of distance. "I'm just an observer," I keep telling myself.

Driving up the mountain is a black SUV. I don't think the people inside the SUV nor the people at the bottom of the mountain can see me, am I invisible? A man steps out of the back seat of the SUV and heads towards the edge of the mountain. He is wearing a black suit and a strong musk cologne. His presence is very strong and threatening. I smell sweat, but not from him. It seems to come from the foot of the mountain. I look down and notice the sweat of the thousands of people gathered on the sand looking up. I see their blank stares. They all look the same; scared, hopeless and defeated. The man on the mountain raises his right hand to signal silence and starts his speech.

"Surrender to me and you will live a comfortable life. You won't even miss your voice. Speak up and watch your love die. Thanks to me you are all the same. It is better to be the same than to be lost in the wilderness of individuality. Look no further for happiness, for it begins today if you choose to be quiet. Those who choose to use their voice against me will be met with uncertainty and that is the true death of you. Listen to me, for I care deeply about you and I know what's best for you, the stars that you're holding on to are dirty and therefore they are garbage. There is no use for them. Give them to me and I'll make sure that you stay clean. For those who oppose me, let this be an example."

A little girl emerges from the SUV. She is of African descent. Her beautiful skin is soft and glowing. Her hair is curly and wild. Her eyes are big and soft, her smile bright. She is wearing a pink hoodie and black jeans. She is one of the cutest girls I've ever seen. You can tell that she has a lot of life in her. She is being escorted by 2 strong and tall men in black suits. They take her to the man on the mountain. He looks at her left hand and asks her to open her hand and give him her stars. The innocent girl relinquishes her stars unsuspectingly. He then shows them to the crowd and crushes them in an instant with his feet. The girl has only one tear drop on her left eye and her glow started to fade. The 2 tall men hurried her back to the SUV. The man on the mountain resumed his speech.

"This is what I can do for you. I can get rid of those ugly and dirty stars. Live your lives without them, you don't need them. They only bring confusion. They make you think that choices are good. They distract you from living your life. I am here to give you life. Through me, you will have a life full of certainty. You will be able to concentrate on what really matters to you. Having the stars in your life brings chaos and scars. Those scars come from all the uncertainty that you've had to endure. I call those scars Failure. If you would've had certainty, you wouldn't have failure. Removing the stars from your life is the only way to be truly alive."

As he uttered those words, I felt a bolt of energy in my body which in turn lifted my seated body involuntarily. I then walked to where the man was standing and looked down at the crowd. I am visible now. I picked up the crushed stardust and threw it up in the air. The wind started spinning the stardust and a glowing yellow light emerged from that haze. The stardust flew all the way to the sky and became stars again. The wind also lifted me up and transported me to the Universe. There, I saw millions of stars. I felt a deep sense of wonder and curiosity. I started walking in space and it felt surreal. Suddenly, there was a female figure made of white light standing right in front of me. She started speaking to me in a soft and loving voice.

"You seek to know what you should do, either speak up against the tyrant or stay quiet, correct?"

"Yes, correct, but I'm scared. Isn't it better to just watch and choose to do nothing?" I replied.

"There is always a choice to make, even when you make no choice at all, you are still casting your vote. That is the essence of being a human. I, on the other hand, cannot tell you what to do because I am imprisoned."

"Why are you imprisoned?" I replied.

"Because you are. I am an extension of you and when I say you I mean humanity. The more humans give away their stars, the more imprisoned I am. See, stars make everything that's living. When you give up your essence, you're essentially giving up your life. The only way to help me is to hold on to your stars."

As she said that, I started to descend. The wind took good care of me on the fall. Time was standing still when I touched the mountain again. As soon as I opened my mouth, time resumed its dance. I cleared my throat and started my speech.

"Removing the stars from your life will make your soul slowly die while your body is still alive. This man had his stars crushed as a little boy and he is trying desperately to fill his void. Hold on to your stars. It is true that life is filled with uncertainty but that's what makes it worth living. The death of your physical form is not to be feared. Only fear the death of your spirit. Your stars give you choice. Now, you can choose to speak up or do nothing, either way you're making a choice. What are you choosing to do today?"
